Ingredients
- For the burgers:
- 1 pound ground turkey, dark meat or 80-90% lean
- 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 cloves garlic, smashed and grated to a paste or finely minced
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- cheese, optional, to taste, of your choice, sliced
- Optional, for serving:
- brioche buns, to taste
- ketchup, to taste
- mustard, to taste
- tomatoes, to taste, sliced
- lettuce, to taste
Directions
Step 1 -Line an 18x26-inch baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2 -In a large bowl, add the ground turkey, the red onion, the panko breadcrumbs, the garlic, the egg, the sea salt, the onion powder, the liquid smoke, the Italian seasoning, and the black pepper and mix with your clean hands until well-combined.
Step 3 -By hand, divide the turkey mixture into 4 equal portions and form the portions into burger patties.
Step 4 -Transfer the turkey burgers onto the prepared baking sheet; with your thumb, press a divot into the middle of each of the turkey burgers to prevent shrinkage while grilling.
Step 5 -Transfer the turkey burgers to the refrigerator and let them chill to firm up so the patties stay together on the grill, about 3 minutes.
Step 6 -Preheat the grill to 450 degrees F.
Step 7 -Clean and grease the grill grates as needed.
Step 8 -Add the turkey burgers to the prepared grill and grill on both sides until the burgers reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F in the thickest part, about 4-5 minutes per side.
Step 9 -About 1 minute before the turkey burgers are done, add the cheese slices to the turkey burgers and allow them to melt.
Step 10 -Transfer the turkey burgers from the grill to a large platter and serve with your favorite buns, toppings, and condiments.
