  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 loaf Challah or French bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • syrup, to taste, for serving

Directions

Step 1 -Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2 -In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter, the brown sugar, and the corn syrup.

Step 3 -Transfer the saucepan from the heat and whisk until the butter mixture is smooth and fully incorporated.

Step 4 -Pour the butter mixture into the prepared baking dish.

Step 5 -Cut the bread into six 1-inch-thick slices.

Step 6 -Arrange the slices in a single layer over the butter mixture, squeezing them so they fit snuggly.

Step 7 -In a bowl, whisk the eggs, the half-and-half, the vanilla, and the salt together.

Step 8 -Pour the egg mixture over the bread, ensuring all pieces are covered.

Step 9 -Cover the baking dish with foil and refrigerate the French toast mixture for at least 8 hours and up to overnight.

Step 10 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 11 -While the oven is preheating, let the French toast mixture sit until it comes to room temperature, about 30 minutes.

Step 12 -Bake the French toast until the bread is puffed and the edges are pale and golden, about 40 minutes.

Step 13 -Let the French toast sit for 5 minutes.
