Ingredients
- For the cake:
- 1 cup flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup walnuts, optional, chopped
- For the topping:
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon cocoa
- 1 cup water, boiling
- vanilla ice cream, optional, to taste, for serving
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -Grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish or square pan.
Step 3 -In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour, the baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of the salt, 2/3 cup of the sugar, and 1 1/2 tablespoons of the cocoa.
Step 4 -Stir in the melted butter, the milk, and the vanilla until combined.
Step 5 -Stir in the walnuts.
Step 6 -Spread the cake mixture into the prepared casserole dish.
Step 7 -In another bowl, combine the remaining sugar, the brown sugar, the remaining salt, and the remaining cocoa.
Step 8 -Sprinkle the topping mixture over top of the batter; do not stir.
Step 9 -Pour the boiling water over top of the topping mixture; do not stir.
Step 10 -Bake until the top of the cake is almost set, about 30 minutes. The cake will rise to the top and a pudding layer will form on the bottom.
Step 11 -Serve warm with the ice cream.
