Ingredients
- 8 ounces fresh sausage, ground or links with casings removed
- 1/2 cup onions, finely chopped
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded, divided
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 3 (6-ounce, 5-count) can biscuit dough
- all-purpose flour, to taste, for dusting the biscuits
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 2 -Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 3 -In a skillet over medium heat, add the sausage and the onions and cook, while crumbling the meat, until the sausage is no longer pink, about 5-6 minutes.
Step 4 -In a medium bowl, add the cream cheese and 3/4 of the cheese and stir to combine.
Step 5 -Add the sausage mixture to the cream cheese mixture and use a wooden spoon to stir until they are evenly combined.
Step 6 -In a small bowl, add the egg and the water, then whisk to combine.
Step 7 -On a large work surface, open the cans and pull out the biscuits. There should be 15 total. Dust the tops and the bottoms of each of the biscuits with the flour.
Step 8 -Use a rolling pin to roll each of the biscuits into oval shapes that are about 1/8-inch-thick.
Step 9 -Spoon about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the sausage mixture onto 1 side of each of the biscuit dough pieces about 3/4 inch from the edge.
Step 10 -Using about 1/2 of the egg mixture, with a pastry brush, coat each of the biscuits on the 3/4-inch edge closest to the filling.
Step 11 -Fold the other edge of each of the biscuits over the filling and line up the edges.
Step 12 -Gently press the air out of each of the turnovers, then use a fork to crimp a seam along the edges.
Step 13 -Place the turnovers onto the prepared baking sheets and evenly brush the tops and the sides with the remaining egg mixture.
Step 14 -Evenly sprinkle the turnovers with the remaining cheese.
Step 15 -Bake the turnovers until the tops are deeply golden-brown and the bottoms are dark brown, about 17-19 minutes.
Step 16 -Serve.
