Ingredients
- For the meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons parsley, freshly chopped, plus more for garnish
- kosher salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- For the casserole:
- 1 baguette, sliced into 3/4-inch-thick pieces
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- kosher salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
- 2 cups mozzarella, shredded and divided
- 3 cups marinara sauce
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 2 -In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, 2 cloves of the garlic, the egg, the breadcrumbs, and the parsley.
Step 3 -Season the mixture generously with the salt and the pepper, then stir together until just combined.
Step 4 -Form the meat mixture into 30 evenly sized balls.
Step 5 -In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil.
Step 6 -Cook the meatballs in the hot oil in batches until they are cooked through at 140 degrees F, about 6-7 minutes.
Step 7 -Drain the meatballs on a paper-towel-lined plate.
Step 8 -Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 9 -Place the baguette slices in an even layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Step 10 -In a medium bowl, stir together the melted butter, the remaining garlic, and the Italian seasoning.
Step 11 -Season the butter mixture with the salt and the pepper.
Step 12 -Brush the butter mixture over the baguette slices.
Step 13 -Layer 1 cup of the mozzarella over the baguette slices.
Step 14 -Layer on an even layer of the marinara sauce, the meatballs, and the remaining mozzarella, in that order.
Step 15 -Bake until the cheese is melty, about 12-15 minutes.
Step 16 -Garnish with the remaining parsley and serve.
