Venetian Fritole are a northern Italian take on doughnuts that will change your life. They're just that sinfully delicious! All you have to do is make a rich, creamy batter–complete with apples, whiskey, and orange zest–and fry it until it's golden brown: the doughnuts are crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, bright, fruity, and delectably sweet. Then these incredible treats are dusted with confectioners' sugar for even more sweetness. Scrumptious Venetian Fritole comes together in just 20 minutes, fast enough to meet any sweet tooth's desire in a hurry. Your dessert game is about to reach new heights!

Ingredients

4 cups self-rising flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup whole milk
3 ounces whiskey, rum, or orange juice
2 medium apples, peeled and grated
8 teaspoons orange zest, grated
oil, for deep-fat frying
confectioners' sugar, optional, to taste, for topping

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and sugar.

Step 2

In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and whiskey until combined.

Step 4

Fold in the apples and orange zest.

Step 5

In an electric skillet or deep fryer, heat the oil to 375 degrees F.

Step 6

Step 7

Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side.

Step 8

Drain the fritoles on paper towels.

Step 9

Dust with the confectioners' sugar.

Step 10

Serve.
