Southern Fried Okra is practically an institution in Southern cuisine, and once you taste it you’ll see why! The mild, grassy flavor of the okra is perfect for frying in herbaceous breading to a golden brown crispness. Southern Fried Okra only takes 30 minutes to make, so it’s perfect for making alongside mac and cheese, barbeque, and other Southern fare!

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups okra, sliced
3 tablespoons buttermilk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornmeal
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic herb seasoning blend
1/8 teaspoon pepper
oil, for frying
salt, optional, to taste
pepper, optional, to taste

Directions

Step 1

Ensure your okra has been washed and dried very thoroughly.

Step 2

In a shallow bowl, add the buttermilk.

Step 3

In another shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, salt, garlic herb seasoning, and pepper.

Step 4

Dip the okra in the buttermilk and then in the cornmeal mixture.

Step 5

Heat 1 inch of oil in a skillet or fryer to 375 degrees F.

Step 6

Working in batches, fry the okra on each side until golden brown, about 1-3 minutes on each side.

Step 7

Drain the fried okra on a paper towel. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve!
