These perfectly Southern collard greens are cooked in a tangy and savory broth to a delectable tenderness highlighting their subtle earthy and sweet flavor. Loaded with melt-in-your-mouth pork, Southern Collard Greens are just as meaty as the main course! These are perfect for serving at barbecues and cook-outs or for warming you up on winter evenings. If only other side dishes could be this amazing!
Ingredients
• 2 sweet onions, finely chopped
• 2 smoked ham hocks, bone-in
• 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
• 3 (32-ounce) containers chicken broth
• 3 (1-pound) packages collard greens, trimmed
• 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
• 2 tablespoons white sugar
• 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
• 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
Directions
Step 1
Combine the sweet onions, ham hocks, and garlic into a stockpot.
Step 2
Add the chicken broth.
Step 3
Cook the mixture on the stove-top over medium heat until the ham begins falling off the bone, about 2 hours.
Step 4
Stir in the collard greens, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper.
Step 5
Cook until the greens have reached the desired tenderness, about 2 hours.
Step 6
Serve!
