Ingredients
• 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for flouring a work surface • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 cup butter, cold, cubed, or shortening • 1 (0.25-ounce) package of active dry yeast • 1/4 cup water, warm • 3/4 cup milk, 2%, warm • 1 large egg, room temperature, lightly beaten • 4 tablespoons butter, melted, dividedDirections
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
Cut in the 1 cup cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In another bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
Add the yeast mixture to the crumb mixture.
Add the milk and egg, mixing well.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to overnight.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Grease two baking sheets.
Divide the dough into 4 equal portions.
Lightly flour a work surface.
On the prepared surface, roll 1 portion into a 12-inch circle.
Brush the dough circle with 1 tablespoon of melted butter.
Cut the dough circle into 12 wedges.
Roll up each wedge, beginning with the wide end.
Place the rolls on the prepared baking sheets.
Repeat with the remaining dough portions.
Cover and let rise in a warm place until nearly doubled, about 1 hour.
Bake until golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.
Transfer the rolls to wire racks to cool slightly.
Serve warm.
